I'm not terrily optimistic about open source community doing something since it requres a device driver expert of experts to write a CDP device driver. And there are not many of those around... and they are usually very busy... and they like to work for hire.
If you know someone that has real world competency writing block device drivers for FreeBSD and wants to devote serious time to developing a CDP device driver. Let me know. I would REALLY like to talk to them.
Yes it would be very possible to build a basic file backup. I don't have focus to execute on this. It would be a VERY different product. Everything we do is built around virtual full backups and lbock level backups so it would really require a completely new product or significant re-write of the one we have and that doesn't look attractive to me at this point.
